Amazing Moment – Little Girl Playing with a Bengal Tiger

This amazing moment of a little girl playing patty cake with a Bengal tiger was caught on camera at the Cougar Mountain Zoo in Issaquah, Washington State. Photographer Dyrk Daniels told the Daily Mail he couldn’t believe his eyes as the 370-lb. tiger approached the little girl, who was pressed up against the glass cage in awe of the “big kitties.” Instead of growling at the tyke, the tiger tenderly placed his paw in line with the girl’s left hand

.“It was incredible to watch,” Daniels told the Daily Mail. “Taj let down his right paw, rubbed his cheek against the glass where the little girl’s face was and moved off.” The tot seems unfazed by the big cat — also known at the zoo as Taj. But it got us thinking, if Taj could talk, what do you think he would say? Tell us your idea for a caption in the comments.

2011 Warren Beautification Award Winner

Michigan Head & Neck Institute is proud to share this information with you. The building that houses both Michigan Head & Neck Institute and Henry Ford Hospital’s Physical Therapy facility has won the 2011 Beautification Award from the the city of Warren. This is primarily due to extensive landscaping with bushes, perennial flowers, rock gardening and statuary that enhanced the image of one of the finer buildings in the city of Warren.

In support of the communities where our patients live and work, we are pleased to be able to help support the Parish Festival of St. Basil the Great located North of Nine Mile between Gratiot & Kelly in Eastpointe, Michigan.

This year, the Festival will be held on March 4th, 5th and 6th.

Sr. Carolyn Leffler from St. Basil along with all the staff members there have worked hard to make their festival a success every year. Dr. Richard Klein and the staff of Michigan Head and Neck Institute wish them another successful Festival!

A Tribute to Sparky Anderson

Many heartfelt words have been written and spoken about Sparky Anderson. He was respected and admired by those in and out of baseball. Sparky had an influence on untold amounts of people including myself and those at Michigan Head and Neck Institute.

I didn’t know him well, but in the two times I played golf with him I learned much about life and learned techniques guiding me to be a successful boss.

Sparky believed and has been quoted as saying, “Baseball is a simple game. If you have good players and if you keep them in the right frame of mind then the manager is a success.”

We talked about how managing a team is quite different than playing the game of golf. A baseball team and; an office treating patients require people of different talents who know each other’s abilities and understand the symbiotic relationship and dependence each has with all other team members. When Sparky was Inducted Into the Baseball Hall of Fame, his acceptance speech reminded me of the lesson I learned from him years earlier.

Almost ten years ago at Cooperstown Sparky said,” I got good players, stayed out of their way, let them win a lot and then just hung around for 26 years”

Most of my staff has been with me for many years and I would vote for each of them to be on an All Star Team… and I thank Sparky for that as I remember his passing and his life.

Dr. Klein Supports Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Dr. Klein has been wearing pink shirts with pink ties this month. He told us that if the NFL and the MLB players wear pink for Breast Cancer Awareness Month he will too. Dr. Klein’s mother passed away due to cancer many years ago.

He then joined the Michigan Cancer Foundation and became its county president as a volunteer for over a decade. Dr. Klein told us that, “He’ll wear pink in a wink if it helps find the link to sink cancer”

Dr. Klein and the staff at Michigan Head & Neck Institute are proud of their continued effort to pay back the community.

Dr. Klein and the staff at Michigan Head & Neck Institute are proud of their continued effort to pay back the community.

Today we were rewarded. Wandering lost on 11 Mile Road, and seemingly disoriented, was an older well-cared-for dog. It appeared to have trouble with sight and hearing.
Dr. Klein took a picture of him (See attached ) and Kerri walked the neighborhood with that picture finding the dog’s frantic owners. The tears of joy in their faces brought smiles of happiness to all of us at Michigan Head & Neck Instittue.

Common Question on WJR’s Loyd Jackson show “The Big Story”

One of the questions that was called in to me while on WJR’s Loyd Jackson show “The Big Story” was, “I have been to my family doctor who sent me to an eye doctor who then sent me to a neurologist. I have pain behind my eye that comes and goes. None of them could tell me why it hurts. Could this possibly be a TMJ problem?

My answer was, “Yes. There is a muscle that was just found a couple years ago called the Sphenomandibularis. It attaches to a part of a small bone behind the eye called the Sphenoid, and the other end attaches to the lower jaw (mandible). Thus they named it the Sphenomandibularis muscle. When it gets tight and foreshortens, the larger lower jaw bone acts as an anchor and the smaller bone behind the eye is torqued and moves. This can be painful. TMJ posturing muscles are in the face, the jaw and the neck. Any of them can get tight and cause some seemingly weird but medically understandable problems.”

I enjoy being on WJR for an hour each month and look forward to these questions.
